Estimado/a Señor/a,
“Europe Meets Latin America: A Forum for Young Leaders: The Bicentenary” (EMLA) is an active network of young leaders from across the world, who conduct activity to strengthen European-Latin American relations. Members join the forum by taking part in an EMLA Weeklong Seminar. The forthcoming EMLA Weeklong Seminar will be held in Berlin from 14th – 19th February 2010 and will have as a theme “The Bicentenary: The Legacies of Latin American Independence and the Opportunities Ahead”. The program will consist of lectures, workshops, seminars, as well as cultural and social activities. During the last three days of the program participants will take part in “Nuestra America: An Interdisciplinary Analysis of the Roles of Global Politics & Civil Society in International Economics”.
“Nuestra America: An Interdisciplinary Analysis of the Roles of Global Politics & Civil Society in International Economics” is an international conference for students, young professionals, economists, diplomatic and political representatives, and civil society practitioners from across the world. “Nuestra America” will take place in Berlin from 17th - 19th February 2010 and will consist of speeches and panel discussions by leading figures from the fields of politics, diplomacy, civil society, academia, and the private sector. Speakers will offer a range of perspectives on the importance of the Latin American independence movements to the development of the region over the subsequent 200 years, the challenges ahead for the region, and the new strategies and approaches being taken to address these challenges. The program will aim to produce policy recommendations for the future of European-Latin American relations.
In particular, “Nuestra America” will pursue the following specific aims:
To explore the Latin American independence movements and the extent to which they determined the development of Latin America over the subsequent 200 years.
To examine the key challenges faced by Latin America, focusing in particular on the areas of poverty, development, public health, and security.
To examine the importance of green technologies, sustainable development, and other environmental strategies to Latin American development.
To consider the importance of support from Europe and other regions in addressing the challenges outlined above, and the shape this support should take.
To analyze the potential of the United Nations and the principles of international law in strengthening relations in the region.
To explore the interdependence of Latin American nations and the policy implications this has.
To discuss the role of the younger generations in addressing the challenges ahead and consider how they can be prepared for this activity.
